Redefining Travel: The Vision Behind Airbnb’s Growth

When CapitalG founder David Lawee first met Airbnb co-founders Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk in 2015, Airbnb was growing fast, but still figuring out how to coexist with the travel industry. Our reason for investing was simple: we believed in their vision for Airbnb and how it would change the world.

Brian, Joe and Nathan recognized shifts in how people were living, working and exploring the world. They understood that people wanted to do more than host an open room — they wanted to show their guests why they love where they’re from and live out their entrepreneurial dreams.

Now, with over 2.9 million hosts around the world and 2 million people staying at an Airbnb every single night, that vision has become a reality.

“For so long, people thought Airbnb was about renting houses. But really, we’re about belonging. What makes this global community so special is that for the very first time, you can belong anywhere.” -Brian Chesky, CEO

Airbnb is (and always has been) in the business of connecting people — something more important now than maybe anytime in recent history. At CapitalG, we’re excited to continue to support them and their many exciting new initiatives to build more meaningful connections around the world.

Congratulations to the entire Airbnb team on another well-deserved milestone. You have inspired us all to embrace your vision for a life filled with meaningful connections.
